It's About Damn Time!

Crack open that bottle of champagne, sister, because there's something in the news worth celebrating this week! After a 3-year run as the sole female Supreme Court justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg welcomes another woman to the bench – Sonia Sotomayor, currently a New York federal appeals court judge, who was featured in last week's LPB short list of possible candidates.

Yesterday, President Obama announced Sotomayor as his choice, and if confirmed by the Senate (he asked them to do so by October), she would become the first Hispanic and the third female Supreme Court justice. She leans liberal but is known for bipartisanship (President George H.W. Bush first nominated her) and has more federal judicial experience than those sitting on the court did when they were nominated.

Here's more on the woman making (and soon to be determining) history:

To learn more about Sotomayor's humble beginnings and her extensive judicial experience, read over her bio and résumé at Political Base

Why Sotomayor? In this memo the White House explains (and defends) Obama's choice.

Sotomayor may have to face some big issues early on. The fall session for the Supreme Court will cover many criminal and business cases, as detailed by Reuters. Plus, here's how she's voted on the major (and most controversial) issues in the past.
